Veterinary acupuncture has a very long history, parallel to human acupuncture.
It is generally accepted that it originated in China. Traditional chinese
medicine, which includes acupuncture, involves a key concept: the balance
(or harmony), not only within the body and spirit, but equally involving external
factors, such as nutritional, seasonal, meteoroligical and sociological.
The clear and simple objective of acupuncture is to re-establish the harmonious
balance of the body when it is in a state of imbalance. Acupuncture points
are situated on parts of the body that show decreased electrical resistance,
or increased electrical conductivity. Once a complete work up has been
done on your pet and a diagnosis is established, acupuncture may be a treatment
option in conjunction with or without surgery or medication. Placement
of very small stainless steel needles are placed accordingly over the surface
of the body. Most animals feel very little or no pain during the treatment,
and once the needles are inserted, frequently relax to the point of falling
asleep. Depending on your pets specific problem, a protocol will be set up
for weekly, monthly or even quarterly treatments. Dr. Koopman is certified
to perform acupuncture and would love to discuss any questions |
